To gain insights into the current experiences, attitudes, and expectations of older adults towards smart home applications, we conducted a survey (n=566) and a participatory design workshop (n=9) to investigate the acceptance and adoption of smart home products and services among this population. The participatory design workshop, in particular, helped identify the urgent needs of older adult participants for smart home products and services, as well as their design and functional preferences. Notably, we found that older adults placed greater emphasis on affective computing in voice interaction interfaces. Subsequently, we employed diary study and co-creation methods to explore older adults’ perceptions of identity, roles, and relationships associated with smart speakers in the home. These research efforts aim to inform the transformation and innovation of product and service scenarios in the context of smart homes, with a focus on meeting the needs and preferences of older adult users.
